Eggs from “Nature’s Health” (Moshav Nir Zvi)
Hello Rabbi,
I saw that your daughter was eating Nir Zvi eggs and even described them as chickens that don’t suffer at all.
Let’s just say I can’t claim anything, because I’m just in the process of becoming vegan (thanks to your column), but I have a real question – does your daughter know how the chickens get to Nir Zvi?
Because I called to find out, and Nir Zvi, apparently like all free-range chicken coops, gets their eggs from regular hatcheries. This means that while they don’t suffer at all in the coop itself, they do have their beaks clipped and would have killed them if they were males.
In short – is shopping at Nir Zvi morally “kosher”?

I have high hopes for your daughter, she sounds like she's in the know - doesn't she know about such a place?
How many generations does it take for a glaat? Or do you have to find wild chickens and only start with them?
Lishi – Hello,
In light of your love for ”Pharma, perhaps you will like the free-range eggs of Afaim Farm, sold at the organic store ‘Pharma-Cultura’ in Moshav Bnei Zion 🙂
Best regards, S. Cholion
Yishai, I don't know if you're joking, being stupid, or just not familiar with the facts.
When you take chicks from a problematic place on a regular basis, it strengthens them and increases their activity, even if these chicks are raised properly by the person who takes them. On the other hand, if you take one of their first chicks and from there you raise your own chicks generation after generation, then you have both saved the first generation from its sad fate and the remaining generations are raised in strict kosher.
Yoni, she doesn't know. Probably not, but I thought maybe you do after all.
