Elections in Haredi society
I have been increasingly exposed to ultra-Orthodox society over the past three years, and from talking to them I discover that a very large portion of society votes for the ultra-Orthodox parties solely because they are ultra-Orthodox parties and even though they disagree with almost nothing that those parties do, and even know that the parties actually hurt them as much as they help them.
From talking to them, I understand that there is no way at all to talk to them about voting for another party.
Can you tell me what this stems from? After all, you studied in Haredi yeshivahs for several years and were even more involved with society than I was. Is there any hope at all that Haredi society will start voting for sensible parties that work for the sake of the entire state and in a sensible way? Talking to them about issues presents completely different basic assumptions, so every time I talk to them about something, it’s one big frustration. This is a question that really preoccupies me, since my wife’s family is Haredi, and therefore I am very exposed to the different discourse on their part.

Do you think the entry of the Haredim into Israeli society, which has been happening more and more in recent years, will cause more desire for political influence and intervention in the country, and maybe they will start voting for other parties?
I was thinking of an interesting direction, maybe if a new Haredi party were to be launched, it could take votes from the Haredim and perhaps change this delusional situation?
I don't know. So far it's not really happening. I also don't think they're entering society more significantly. These are still pretty marginal phenomena.
It depends on who.
There are hardcore people who don't go near anything, but there are “modern” ultra-Orthodox who are slowly going out to work more and enlisting in the army (even if it's mainly to places where they study in the army and serve for a very short period of time).
It's true that this has almost no effect on their opinions, but there are small shifts.
And here is Tamritz's response, which he returns with a question from a Haredi home from the heart of Ashkenazi Haredi society, to the question you raise:
