Did the rabbi go through all the reasons why electricity is prohibited on Shabbat? And if so, which of them did he think was correct?
On the surface, it seems that they decided in advance to ban it and only then looked for reasons in retrospect.

This is certainly true, and I have written this more than once. But not as a criticism. It is a reasonable and legitimate move. It seems to me to be constructive, and I detailed it in column 397.
