Engineering studies on Saturday

שו”תCategory: HalachaEngineering studies on Saturday
asked 6 months ago

Hello Rabbi,

I am an engineer by profession, and I also like to stay up to date and learn materials in the field.

Is it true that I am not allowed to study these engineering courses on Shabbat because it is like a sacred preparation for the mundane?
Although I enjoy just knowing how things work?

If it’s in the field of engineering but not specifically in my field of work, will the answer change? (Example: RF engineer who wants to learn about VLSI)

Studying wisdom is permissible (Rema’s answer, 9th century, and more). If it is also your professional knowledge, then yes. I think it is permissible if you were to do it even if it was not your profession.

Where and what should I look for if this is professional knowledge?
