evolution

asked 9 years ago

Shalom Rabbi, according to evolution, man evolved from a monkey that evolved from an even earlier monkey, and there is evidence of these stages of development… How does this fit in with the creation of man in the Book of Genesis?

Hello.
First, according to current accepted practice, humans and apes are both developments of a common ancestor.
The description in the Book of Genesis does not address the question of these processes. Therefore, it can be explained in several ways: 1. On the sixth day, the animal was created, from which man emerged at the end of the evolutionary process. 2. The description is that man was created on the sixth day, but in fact he was created through an evolutionary process from his ancestor who was created on the fourth day. 3. The entire description is metaphorical and not historical, and its purpose is moral (to explain the value of man). Etc., etc.
Of course, it’s also possible that the theory that describes human development is wrong. It has quite a few assumptions and logical leaps. To me, it seems plausible, but my faith in it is not unlimited.
