evolution

asked 6 years ago

Hello Rabbi
I read your book “God Plays Dice,” and after reading it, it really seems that there is no contradiction between the existence of God and evolution, even the opposite, as the rabbi elaborated in his book.
But if I make the transition between the philosophical aspect and the Jewish religious aspect, how does one think that Judaism explains evolution? My main question is directed towards the creation account written in the Torah, which apparently is quite clear that it contradicts evolution (six days, the image of God, the way in which woman was created). I would be happy if the rabbi would answer or alternatively refer to places that deal with the matter.

There are quite a few materials that deal with the biblical description of the relationship to evolution. The basic description is similar, as is the order of the steps. There are discrepancies regarding details. In general, there are some similarities to this, but as far as I am concerned, this description is not historical but mythical. Its function is to teach us what is true and what is proper, not what actually happened. It can certainly be an educational myth, and therefore the discussion of the relationships to science seems to me to be worthless and not very important. There are also several discussions on such topics here on the site, and you can search.

Why does the myth teach that the Rameshim were created on the fifth day?

I don't know. Why does the entire biblical corpus educate? From Genesis to the eyes of all Israel? In general, the description of creation shows us the hierarchy of animal life (inanimate, growing, living of its kind, speaking).

The fact that the snake could talk contradicts principles more basic than evolution. Why aren't they asking about that?
