Expired commandments and their reason
This may be too general a question, but I would like to know…
When the Sages decreed a prohibition for some reason, and now the reason has been nullified or has been proven to be wrong – is the prohibition nullified? And is there a difference between it having been proven to be wrong in advance and the reason now no longer being valid?
I would appreciate the answer and the sources you wrote about so I can look into this.
It is accepted in halakhic law that even if the reason is invalid, the regulation is not invalidated until it is invalidated by another rabbinic court (Sanhedrin). It is true that the Maimonides and the Rabbis disagreed on whether the other rabbinic court should be greater in wisdom and minyan or not. See Halacha Memariam, Chapter 2, Chapter 2 and the subjects and interpreters there.
