Falling asleep during a sermon outside the sukkah
What should someone who is forced to listen to a sermon between mincha and maariv in a synagogue, and it is clear to him that he will fall asleep because of the sermon, do?
Is he obligated to return to the sukkah at home and return again for Maariv, or, as is his custom throughout the year to pray both prayers together, is he allowed to stay and fall asleep in the sukkah?
No problem. He’ll fall asleep in the hospital like he does all year. As usual.
There is an additional problem with this from the sanctity of the synagogue, which prohibits sleeping in the synagogue, even for a nap (napping). I found a quote from the Pearls of Halacha:
And they allowed the students to take a little nap in the Beit Midrash. Even though it is forbidden to sleep or nap in a synagogue, in any case in the Beit Midrash they allowed it, since the students are there all day, it is impossible not to take a little nap.
True, but there is room for argument that our synagogue is a legal Beit Midrash. It is hard not to doze off to the customary sermons that are delivered there.
