Fear of theft

שו”תFear of theft
asked 5 years ago

Someone is offering me a CD with a collection of software (like the Treasure of Wisdom project, the Torah CD) for sale at a price of 1500 NIS per unit if you buy three. The price doesn’t sound logical to me and there’s probably something dirty here. He explains in a half-hearted manner that he’s just a messenger and that this is an institution that bought licenses and doesn’t need them all, take it or leave it. I think it might be stolen in some way. But of course I’d be very happy to buy it because it’s a real bargain. Am I allowed to buy it? Should I insist that he come back with explanations and if they’re not convincing or verified, then give up?

It is forbidden to buy stolen property. If it is suspicious, ask him for the seller’s licenses/franchises. If he cannot show them, he probably doesn’t have any. You can also ask the Responsa Project or Otzar Hochma and hear from them.
