Fine abroad

שו”תCategory: HalachaFine abroad
asked 6 years ago

Rabbi Shalom, I have a small problem that I don’t know how to deal with on a halakhic level – we are traveling abroad with a few guys in a rented car and we received a parking ticket. The problem is that most of the guys don’t want to pay the fine and if they don’t pay it goes to the rental company. And that’s a kind of robbery, I suppose. The problem is that I don’t know if I have to pay the entire fine myself because they won’t join in, or not pay and then I’m complicit in the robbery?

First, of course there is a principled obligation to pay the fine. I don’t think you have to pay the whole thing. But as far as I know, if you don’t pay, you are likely to receive a report in the mail with interest and additional legal fees, etc. So it is also beneficial to pay. What can you do with your partners? You should consult with an attorney about how you can force them to pay so that you don’t incur a larger fine in the future.
