Genetics

שו”תGenetics
asked 3 years ago

Do you think there is a genetic/racial difference that affects IQ? Do you think “Ashkenazi Jews” are more “smart” than Mizrahi Jews or is it all down to circumstance and genetics does not affect IQ? (I’m asking your assessment and what your intuition is on the matter, since there are no clear studies on this, and if there are studies that the rabbi knows about, I would be happy to refer to them)

I have no idea. But the sensitivity to such statements is stupid in my opinion. It is certainly possible, and even likely, that there is a genetic basis for intelligence. I have the impression that there is an acquired component, but it is very likely that there is also an innate and therefore genetic component. And if there are differences in intelligence between populations, then what? This is a factual question and requires scientific examination.

I agree with you that this is a factual question, but still, the implications of this question cannot be ignored, because if we find that people of type x are much smarter than people of type y, then we will end up with discrimination and exclusion of population y and racism (in practice, not just in emotions (celebrate) Intelligence is the main component of everything in life, and if you give priority to one over the other because of genetic things, then the consequences will be devastating.
Isn't it better to lie to ourselves so as not to reach this situation?
Is it permissible to change for the sake of peace?

In the past it was the other way around. The Ashkenazim were the primitives and the ignorant, and the Mizrahi were well-versed in philosophy, science and mathematics. The Sephardim, especially in Europe, maintained their education and high status. The problem was that they had small families and therefore became a relatively small minority among European Jews. After the Ashkenazim began to become educated, the European Sephardim began to assimilate quite a bit among them.
This was as part of the absorption of the Islamic world. Today the Mizrahi contain a higher percentage of ignorant and primitive people.

There were also classes among the Ashkenazim. The Jews of Germany and Western Europe were considered more educated, wise and developed. The Jews of Eastern Europe were considered inferior in the eyes of Western Jews and were called Ost-Juden.

Not true. If we find that there are differences between populations, we must honestly admit it. Regarding the implications, two things must be taken into account: 1. The difference is statistical, but it is clear that a certain person can be very smart even if he belongs to the ”stupid” group. 2. A person's rights are not related to his intelligence. The fact that someone is less smart does not mean that he deserves different treatment. And if someone is disabled and is treated like that, he should be treated and not lied to. Psychometric tests rank people and have implications for university admission. Is this racism (or rationality)?

A population that is less intelligent than another population will receive different treatment, because it is clear that there will be a priority for the intelligent population over the stupid population (just as it is more difficult for autistic people to integrate into society). Regarding the psychometric test, I think this is the reason that the school always makes sure to mention and write that the psychometric test does not test intelligence, but all sorts of other things (I have no doubt that they are lying and not brave enough to tell the truth, but there are things in the body that they also understand that if we say that the psychometric test is intended to test intelligence, then the consequences will be devastating). What I am actually saying is that I do not disagree with the rabbi in principle and I agree that genetics obviously have a meaning in these things, but I believe that if we tell this truth, we will end up with "racism," because it will not be possible to accuse me of why I prefer to hire an Ashkenazi waiter over an Easterner, because intelligence is such an influential trait that it is expressed even in banal jobs like waitressing.

Not true. And if so, then we need to address this and not lie. Each person should be tested individually, and if there is no way to test, then stereotypes are a legitimate way of sorting and there is no racism in them.
The psychometric tests some abilities, and it really doesn't matter if they call it intelligence or something else. It's an opening for sorting people.
I think we've exhausted it.

Thank you very much for the reasoned explanation
P.S. Does His Excellency give lessons to the general public in person?
