God – a merciful and compassionate God
Hello,
I have a question that I really haven’t found an answer to. I would be happy if the rabbi could help.
Why do we assume that God is good? And not according to the Bible.
(If the rabbi claims that he is perfect, then I will personally ask where the idea of perfection comes from.)

Does our Rabbi Shalit, one of the greatest philosophers and especially theologist of all time, not have any argument in favor of God's goodness?...even a mediocre argument?
I have a lot of mediocre arguments, and I don't see any point in them. Why do you need an argument if there is information? Do you have an argument in favor of the law of gravity? It simply exists because we have seen it. Although I have hereby been appointed the greatest of philosophers, a great philosopher must know where philosophy is not needed and what it cannot do.
If it's just one mediocre argument then that's fine.
But if there are a lot of different arguments then we can connect them all. And even if each argument on its own won't stand. Together, each one will help the other and his brother will speak out.
Maybe the rabbi will just write the titles of the arguments so I can search for them on Google or something like that. 🙂
K, I don't consider myself a search engine and I have no interest in engaging in worthless arguments.
You have to ask yourself first why do you assume you are good?
Then you have to ask, why do you assume God is as good as you?
Then you start to understand the problem. Then you start to ask, what is good anyway? Who decides?
In Maimonides' view, the statement that something exists and the statement that it is good use different predicates that have a teaching about the same matter. The explanation is long, but I think anyone who studies the subject will be able to see the justice of the things. From this, it will not be difficult to see that the source of existence for all things is in fact the supreme good and the standard for all possible good.
That God is good, this is the claim of the Holy Scriptures. If you see a person who is well or has been made better, then some will say that it happened because of God's goodness. But even without examining the fate of man: a dolphin gets entangled in a net and of course he slowly begins to suffocate from lack of air. The terrible agony ends with his death.
How many times does this happen? About 800 times every day.
A chick is ground with metal knives.
How many times does this happen? In Israel alone, about 25,000 every day
Chicks are thrown to their deaths by their siblings
Animals are eaten while still alive
Animals die from smoke
Animals die from gunfire
Animals die from cold
Animals die from poisoning
Animals die from abuse
Animals are burned to death
And finally, what are we told? :
“The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all his works”
The thread question is why God is good. You are raising a problem from reality and that is another question that I have actually answered in several places.
