God of the Gaps

שו”תCategory: philosophyGod of the Gaps
asked 1 year ago

Hello Rabbi. Some try to prove that God exists by showing that there is no explanation for a certain phenomenon and therefore we must say that God caused it. Many argue against these proofs that just because we don’t know the explanation doesn’t mean there is no explanation. What is the difference between these proofs and proof by negation?
thanks

This is what is called the “god of the gaps.” In my books and articles, I have explained the difference. Proof by virtue of a gap is not proof that future scientific research may close the gap and find an explanation. But here we are talking about a fundamental gap that cannot be closed by future research. If you do not receive such proofs, you can also throw quite a few scientific theories in the trash.
