Herod the Evil

Herod rebuilt the Temple, and also expanded the area of the Temple Mount and built its new walls, as is generally accepted among historians and as appears to be the opinion of the Sages
(Therefore, the Second Temple in its final form is referred to by the Sages as the "Building of Herod": Whoever has not seen the building of Herod has not seen a beautiful building from his time; and see also Baba Batra, page 3: He said (=Baba ben Buta) to him (= Herod), the light of the world has gone out, as it is written that the lamp of the commandment and the Torah are light, let him go and engage in the light of the world (=he will build the Temple), as it is written, and all the nations will flow to him; the Sages saw this as a kind of correction to some extent for some of his evil deeds).
