Honoring the righteous

שו”תHonoring the righteous
asked 3 years ago

Fear the name of your God, including the scholars of Torah. Or also including the disciples of the righteous. That is, he is not a great scholar in the Torah, but he fears heaven and is meticulous in the light commandments as well as the serious ones, and is wary of any wavering of prohibition, repaying kindness with all his might, and his heart is warm in the service of God, in his love and fear of Him, and he grieves over the sorrow of the Shekhinah. Are we obligated to honor and respect Him and does not need purification, and do we return to him a loss with the imprint of an eye?

Good question. I don’t think so. Scholars are people who know Torah. Tzaddikim are something else. I suppose he deserves respect, of course, but in my opinion he doesn’t fit within the boundaries of the mitzvah.
