Inauguration ceremony
To the honorable Rabbi, peace and blessings. I am a student in a high school yeshiva in the 12th grade where it is customary to hold a “sheva” ceremony for the new students every year. This means that they are woken up in the middle of the night and taken through stations that make them feel the comfort of the arms of the 12th graders and how great and powerful they are and how small and poor they are. I think it is a terrible event (from a halakhic point of view and in general, what it has to do with the yeshiva is unclear) and therefore in previous years (except for the first year…) I did not attend the event. This year the discussion came up again because our group is the one hosting it. I understood from the beginning that if I canceled the event, I would not succeed, so I asked the rabbi what the appropriate course of action should be, should I not attend at all or should I attend and try to convey the experience to the young people in a nicer way?
thanks
