Is Esau red?

שו”תCategory: generalIs Esau red?

Hello,
How did the Sages, after the destruction of the Second Temple, turn “Esau is Edom” into Rome, and how did both of these, Edom and Rome, turn into Christianity? Didn’t the Torah specifically intend Esau/Edom?
Kind regards, Benjamin

I don’t know. This is a type of sermon and commentary on the Bible, so I’m not answering it. To May the N.P.M., is Rome/Christianity an Edomite or not?

It is believed that this was a type of censorship, as is not said in the Christian Talmud, but rather Sadducean or male.

The sages always use biblical verses for their own needs and the reality in which they live. Incidentally, Christianity also uses biblical verses to justify its theology. For example, according to their system, Esau represents Judaism, who sold his birthright to Jacob. Jacob represents Christians. In general, the role of religious people is to interpret the biblical text according to the needs presented to them. Therefore, many times you will not find a connection between the plain text and the Darsh or between the context.

There is a long article about this by Gershon Cohen, "Esua as a Symbol in Early Modern Thought."
