Is it possible to study science alone?

I have a question that is not directly related to the Torah, I hope that’s okay.
The question is –
Can someone who is very talented learn the sciences (physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, and so on) on their own for self-enrichment from sites like Udemy, Coursera, and the like, or will without physically going to an academy the material not be fully understood or will other elements be missing?
In other words – does physically going to an academy give you things that you can’t get through self-study?
