Is there a philosophical benefit to studying mathematics?

Hello Rabbi Michi,
Do you think the field of philosophy is useful in studying mathematics?
Excuse my ignorance, but I’ve never studied math seriously, so I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. I’m curious if this can contribute anything to my philosophical question.

And this is of course a golden opportunity to thank you for your blessed work. I must share that you are the person who has influenced me the most spiritually, and for that I owe you a lot (despite my disagreement with many of your ideas… 🙂)

Mathematics itself is a branch of philosophy. The formal branch. So obviously there is value. But if you are interested in certain branches then maybe there is no contribution to mathematics. Depends on your interests.

I am interested in the implications of mathematics for the field of epistemology and the theory of being.
Have you perhaps written something about the reality of mathematical beings? (Are they imagination, ideas that exist in some reality, etc.)

מיכי Staff replied 5 months ago

Absolutely. I have written a lot about this. See, for example, columns 434-5, and 385.
