Issue analysis
Many times, while studying a topic, there are situations in which the Gemara states a law or principle (or teaching) that some have understood in a more simplistic way, and there are commentators who do perceive it that way – as tools of the Talmud, without making overly speculative distinctions, and there are Acharonim (especially Acharonim Acharonim) who give it a more principled and logical meaning, which explains all the laws in a more ‘smooth’ way…
My tendency is always to happily adopt the more rational explanations, and in every halachic question to decide according to that reasoning…
I have a friend who always claims that it is wrong to adopt the explanation that seems more logical. After all, we have received the instructions of the Talmud, and therefore one should always look in the Talmud for an indication of the explanation given, and although there is no contradiction, it seems that these explanations added to the understanding of the Talmud. Moreover, the first ones often did not bring these intellectual understandings…
Another friend always argues with him that we have accepted the instructions of the Talmud, and therefore if there is an explanation that more logically explains the law of the Talmud, it should be adopted, and it is not so important to search the Talmud and Rishonim for how they understood the Gemara, as long as it does not contradict the Talmud, it is fine…
