Jerusalem Municipality Elections – Question
Hello Rabbi Michael,
We’ve spoken in the past, both by email and by phone, but His Honor probably won’t remember me.
I am a resident of Jerusalem and define myself as a religiously observant person.
I attached to the email a letter that was published shortly before the Jerusalem municipal elections (between the secular Ofer Berkowitz and the religious Moshe Leon) from the rabbi of the Old City, Rabbi Nebenzl (a highly respected and respected figure from a religious perspective among many), in which he wrote what he wrote.
…and I am in great embarrassment: “That everyone who has received spiritual benefit from me…go offer Moshe Leon…”
This cataloging where religious points to religious and secular points to secular, I feel very much here (and it is completely delusional, in principle), and perhaps there are many reasons that I have not been exposed to and therefore I cannot judge this act of Rabbi Nebenzel through my own eyes, but I really cannot think of anything positive about it when the Rabbi uses his “rights” from a religious-halachic perspective (whoever received from me, etc.) and appeals to the general public in order to increase the number of votes so that a certain person can be elected? I have a very hard time with this.
And it is very important to me to know what His Honor thinks about the content of the letter? How can one be patient as a mitzvot-observant person to a letter of this type, even if he is a scholar (at least that is what they say, I am not personally acquainted with the rabbi)?
Thank you in advance for reading my letter, even if you don’t have time to answer me (I know that His Excellency is very busy)
