Last Water and the Father’s Custom

שו”תCategory: HalachaLast Water and the Father’s Custom
asked 8 years ago

Hello Rabbi.
My father has the custom of taking the last water before the blessing of food. The custom of taking the last water is, as you already know, because of the salt of Sodom, which the Torah says was found in certain places. What concern is there about the salt of Sodom today? Am I obligated to continue this regulation? It did not spread among the people of Israel, it was amended to certain places and it was also amended because of (this is one of the reasons, according to what I know) scientific information that was available at the time (they were afraid that it might touch their eyes and cause blindness).
Thank you!

Hello. The Shulchan Ar-Rahman itself presents both opinions (see at the end the sign that some used to not take it). Therefore, whoever avoids this has something to rely on. Incidentally, not everyone agrees that it is because of the salt of Sodom, but it really seems that today there is no good reason for it. And by the way, Dagev did become widespread. Perhaps you mean that today it is not so widespread, but that already brings us into the issue of a regulation that became widespread and Hadar returned.
