In the Rabbi’s opinion, does one fulfill a mitzvah when serving in the army (for example, a mitzvah war) or is it only a matter of protecting the country and carrying part of the national burden?

There is no formal mitzvah in this. Of course, protecting life is a mitzvah, just like someone who would protect people’s lives in Australia. By the way, the mitzvah wars in the Rambam, one of them is Ezrat Yisrael Mead Tzer. Many believe that this is a real mitzvah, and in my opinion this is different from the other two. The others are specific mitzvahs and this is just the protection of life.
