Morality and religion

Peace, Your Honor,
Regarding the conflict between morality and religion, what do you think a person who is committed to both religion and morality should do if there is a conflict between them?

  • I think I once saw an approach from you that said that one should exercise discretion and decide each case on its own merits (but I may not be accurate about that)

A clear example from which I think I can draw the conclusion that Halacha trumps morality, where there is a conflict (at least among all religious Jews, and strangely enough, even the secular are like the religious in this).

Circumcision – on the surface an immoral and cruel act for a small and weak creature, is this evidence that Halacha is always above morality?
And if not, then when is it not above morality? And why in the case of circumcision does the law always prevail?

Thanks, I hope I phrased the question appropriately.

It’s difficult for me to give an exhaustive answer here. I’ve written and spoken about this a great deal. At the beginning of my book, “Moves Between the Standings,” and in a series of lessons here on the site about Halacha and Morals.
