Morality without God

שו”תCategory: moralMorality without God
asked 3 years ago

How does the rabbi treat someone who says he doesn’t believe in God but chooses morality because he is empathetic? He suffers when he sees others in distress.
Or for example, he doesn’t want to be a hypocrite and therefore cannot demand that others act morally while he does not act that way.
Thank you very much for all the answers you give me and the site in general.

He treats him very nicely. I treat him as someone who chose to behave morally without belief in God. A good person and not religious. Is there a question here?

So maybe I didn't understand the Rabbi's teaching on the matter. I understood from the Rabbi that in the absence of God there is no basis for morality. I would be happy if the Rabbi would explain or clarify the situation of that person who practices morality even though he doesn't believe in God. Or clarify why in the absence of God there is no basis for morality possible.

Indeed, you understood correctly. In my philosophical opinion, without faith in God there is no valid morality. But people do not always understand this, and therefore behave morally even without believing. I proposed to explain such a situation in one of two ways: 1. Implicit belief (unconscious of the person himself). 2. Inconsistency.
And I still do not understand what the question is. What does it mean how I treat this person? Do I offer him a cup of tea?
