On “Do not deviate” according to Rashi
Good morning!
Have you ever written anything about Rashi’s commentary on “Do not turn to the right or left” – even if he tells you about the left being the right…
It seems that Rashi took the Safri one step further (the Safri probably speaks in case you are in doubt) and seemingly contradicts the Yerushalmi on this matter.
(This is a topic “close” to what you dealt with in the last series in Ra’anana in “La Tesur”…)
What do you think?
thanks!
Only about two weeks ago, in a book I am writing about current theology, I came to this point. And indeed, I emphasized this difference, but I noted that even in Rashi it is not necessarily to be interpreted literally. He understands that the teaching is addressed to the common man, and therefore he describes things from his perspective: even if you see (in your eyes) that they are teaching on the right that he is on the left, do as they teach.
By the way, even in the literal interpretation, the interpretation is not necessary, and for the same reason: it seems to you, that is, this is indeed your conclusion. Although if one wants to reconcile it with the Jerusalemite version, the literal interpretation is preferable.
