On what basis are values chosen?
Good evening, Rabbi.
A question that has interested me for a long time is how can one reach certain values or starting points from endings that direct one’s attention toward a specific goal?
For example, it seems that this often stems from strong intuition, and it is not so clear why a rationalist who in many cases would see something that stems from emotion as less important, or even as an abomination, starts all the meanings and goals in life from intuition?
It is clear that such a perspective leads you to a kind of nihilism, but it is also impossible to dismiss it as nihilistic because it is only because you “feel” that nihilism is not good.
Therefore, briefly, I will return to the main question, what is the king with which you reach goals, or why is it even supposed that there are any? (Yes, logic says that there is a goal for everything, but a person also does logical things because he feels that what does not make sense is “low”, in the end, this too stems from a certain emotion)
You are confusing emotion with intuition. These are two completely different things. Intuition is part of reason. How do you arrive at your premises? You have no proof. On the other hand, if you say that every premise is emotion, then proofs are worthless, because every proof is built on premises.
The identification between intuition and emotion stems from the position that if there is no proof or reasoning, it is a subjective emotion. But as mentioned, according to this, everything is a subjective emotion (after all, every proof is built on assumptions, and therefore if there is no proof, then it is an emotion).
Therefore, there are only two options: be a complete skeptic and not accept any claim (it’s all emotion). Or understand that assumptions are not emotion but intuition.
So how do I know how to tell the difference between them? After all, is it possible for people to make assumptions based on emotional motives?
There is no mathematical measure here. You have to examine yourself whether it is an emotion or intuition and try to compare different sides and angles and cross-reference information.
It is always possible that we act from emotional motives, but this is also true in science and in any other field. If you are afraid of this, you will inevitably become a complete skeptic. But if you are a skeptic, there is no way to answer you.
In my opinion, what you need to do is examine to the extent of your ability that it is intuition and not emotion, and from now on assume that this is the truth until proven otherwise. You need to understand that there is no certainty in the world, but not all uncertainty is doubt. There is uncertainty of a few percent and there is doubt that it is 50-50.
I have dedicated entire books to this, if it interests you. The entire analytic-synthetic quartet actually revolves around this, but mainly two carts and an unstable truth.
So if I can't tell the difference between emotion and intuition, is everything meaningless?
Is it possible to buy this trait?
I didn't understand the question. Even if I answer you, you can raise objections to my answer. What do you want me to say?
Intuition is emotion. And it is a fact. And it has nothing to do with skepticism.
Human assumptions are emotion and that is the case.
You cannot overcome this by distorting reality as you knowingly do.
“According to this everything is subjective emotion” It is a statement of fact. Intuition says so.
