Other Mathematics and Rabbi Meir
Peace be upon the Grand Master Shlita.
1. Also according to you, mathematics is related to the physical universe because what is a number in general if the universe cannot be divided into numbers and calculations? Besides, mathematics itself is measured according to the physical universe. If a mathematician invents a calculation that does not work in the real world, the calculation will be thrown away. By the way, is ordinary language different from mathematics? It also speaks in abstract concepts that come from the physical world, only it explains the world in a more emotional way.
2. Is there a story about Rabbi Meir who would learn from another rabbi and claim that “he took from him and threw away his shell?” Rabbi Meir is mentioned positively in this approach, while himself who learned from various books is mentioned negatively (certainly himself who was still a kosher who used books such as “he took from him, etc.”)?
- Mathematics is related to the physical universe, but through a connection of inspiration. We can define the concept of a number or a triangle because of experiences and acquaintances we have had in our experience, but these are only didactic means. Ultimately, these concepts have an existence independent of the universe. I gave the example of Euclidean geometry, which is the most confusing example because it is a mathematical field that was actually born as a description of the world. And now, it turns out from the general theory of relativity that it does not describe our universe (but only approximately). Does this mean that the system is undefined or worthless? Absolutely not. As a mathematical field, it remains the same, only physics has turned out to be different for us.
What does language have to do with emotion, and what does it have to do with all of this and our discussion? I don’t understand.
2. Two distinctions in this matter: A. Another read books of minutah and not good books in the guise of minutah (with a shell of minutah). In his books, the inside was minutah and not just the shell. B. Apparently, Another was unable to separate the wheat from the chaff, while R.M. did.
