Prayer in the army

שו”תCategory: HalachaPrayer in the army
asked 7 years ago

Hello Rabbi Michael.
I try to pray 3 prayers every day, even during military service, and sometimes I pray in a shirt and sleep pants. Is this permissible or forbidden?
I vaguely remember the halacha regarding standing before God, which requires wearing respectable clothing, but what should I do in this reality that the halacha does not recognize?
Thank you in advance.

It is appropriate to pray in respectable clothing, but I think circumstances can affect what is considered respectable. There is certainly room for lenience if it is very difficult to dress. Halacha also recognized situations of distress that were much more difficult than military service, so I don’t think we should reach statements about the type of situations that Halacha did not recognize.
