Why is there no obligation? There is a rabbinical law and it is obligatory to pray. Does your siddur contain nothing except requests? It is true that requests have a problem of intention, so at most you can forgo them. It is true that you can also ask and maybe it will be answered after all (although this rarely happens). We are very far from Him, He is very angry with us, for 2000 years we have been hiding our faces.. I wonder why?
