Question about the Passover Haggadah

שו”תCategory: generalQuestion about the Passover Haggadah
asked 9 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
I would be happy to know if you have any explanation for the central text in the Passover Haggadah, ‘In every generation they rise up against us to destroy us, and the Holy One saves us from their hand.’ When exactly did this happen? We were never saved from anything, always sheep for the slaughter. And in general, I think that at the time this text was written it was much worse than it is now, so what does he mean when he writes this?
This question bothers me a lot and makes it difficult for me to read the Haggadah. I would appreciate help.
Thank you very much.

Hello. First, we can read this as part of our experience as Exoduses from Egypt. Those whom God saved and we must see ourselves as if we ourselves were Exoduses from Egypt. Second, the fact that we are here. That is, he does save us all the time. Although not the individuals (those died en masse) but the Jewish collective. It survives despite all the persecution. Indeed, there are quite a few dead, but the recognition is for collective survival. And third, if the situation is much better now, then what’s the problem? Aren’t you living now? Thank God for your current situation. A kosher and happy holiday.
