Questions about the Book of Esther

שו”תCategory: HalachaQuestions about the Book of Esther
asked 9 years ago

1. In the Book of Esther we saw the Jews kneeling and bowing to Haman because Ahasuerus had commanded it. Is this permissible?
(In what cases is it permitted?) And how were they not punished for it if it is prohibited.
2. Chazal determined that Mordechai married Esther, so how was she considered a virgin while being sent to marry the king if she was already married to Mordechai? (After all, it is mentioned that she took him as a daughter, and so, and he became the guardian of Hadassah (Esther))
3. How did many of the peoples of the land become Jewish in seconds? After all, it is a process…
4. The fact that Esther is Jewish and marries a Gentile means that her children will be Jewish, but how did she agree to marry a Gentile who was uncircumcised in the first place, and Mordechai recommended it to her? Doesn’t this contradict the education she received? (The Torah mentions the story of Shechem and Dinah, “for she was a disgrace to us”).
5. What do you think is the most likely reason why the scroll was included in the canon of books?
Happy Purim

Sorry for the delay. I didn’t see it.
  1. If the kneeling is not due to a “Z” (a “Z”), there is no problem with that. There are midrashim that said it was a “Z” (a “Z”), but the plain meaning is not like that.
  2. Did he take her as a daughter or did he groom her? Does that mean he married her? The fact that Mordechai was married to her is a midrash and not an explanation of the verses. Maybe they didn’t know that she was not a virgin.
  3. Who said it was in seconds? The process, by the way, is not really important. As long as there is serious intention, one can convert immediately. I remember there was an article by Rabbi Yoel Ben Nun about the mass conversion of huge groups by immersion in the sea.
  4. What does the agreement mean? They took it. Esther was the world’s greatest. Where did Mordechai recommend her?
  5. I don’t know.
