Raffle for Aliyat for money at a synagogue on Shabbat

peace
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a synagogue on Shabbat, and I was amazed to discover that the local rabbi has started raffling off the refreshments while standing on the stage. ₪100 for the first time, once for the second time, etc.
Instinctively, I felt that this went against the principles of Shabbat and even its observance. Is this a common custom or does it belong only to certain communities (Chabad/Hasidism)?
Thank you and have a good weekend.

This is accepted in many places. Usually it is not a lottery but a sale. It is used to maintain the synagogue, and those who do not like this custom are welcome to donate their money to the synagogue’s maintenance.
