Raising the soul of the deceased

שו”תCategory: HalachaRaising the soul of the deceased
asked 9 years ago

What is the source of the fact that we can study or pray for the repose of the soul of a deceased person? And if there is a source for this, what is the meaning of it? Why does our study or prayer here in this world help someone who has already ended his life? Isn’t he judged according to his own deeds?

Shalom Nathan. There are all sorts of customs that have developed around elevating the soul and healing, including the study of the Bible. In the Gemara, 16, it appears that a sitting was held at Hezekiah’s grave out of respect for him. It does not say there that this elevating the soul for him. See sources and a brief discussion here: http://www.kipa.co.il/ask/show/12194-%D7%94%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%A2%D7%9C%D7%AA-%D7%91%D7%9E%D7%A2%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%9D-%D7%9C%D7%A2%D7%99%D7%9C%D7%95%D7%99-%D7%A0%D7%A9%D7%9E%D7%AA-%D7%94%D7%A0%D7%A4%D7%98%D7%A8 Regarding studying medicine, it is apparently absolutely forbidden because of the Amoraic and divination methods. And the poskim wrote that if you do it so that the rights will be granted to the patient and not so that the study itself will cure, then perhaps it is permissible. And even then, it is not clear to me why the rights will be for the deceased/patient (and that it is possible to grant rights, or perhaps God, blessed be He, attributes this to his credit because thanks to him we learned more Torah. And it is clear that it should be a study that is done especially in his honor and not a study that is studied in this or that way). It seems to me that if you study something in this or that way and dedicate it to the credit of someone’s healing, it has no meaning. If you add study in his credit, then there is some reason to believe that it will benefit him.

I wanted to point out that Rabbi Michi's words were actually written by Rabbi Feinstein.

Strange Strange Strange

Every person returns to reincarnation to correct. So what good will the Eloi do - it's a trade?
If that were true, we would beg for the benefit of the wicked - why not - it is written and all your people are righteous, so we will save them by the Eloi!

By the way, if you really dedicate learning to Eloi, then don't the students receive a reward?
Your Honor, honoring parents is a sublime thing, even after their death it is a mitzvah to say Kaddish over them even if they are Gentiles, but what good will that do them? They died Gentiles! Can you explain?

You make a lot of assumptions that have no basis and complicate matters. Reincarnations and elevations, etc. They don't say Kaddish over non-Jewish parents (and there is no mitzvah to honor them). And besides, non-Jewish people are also human beings, and if they died as non-Jewish people, then don't they deserve elevation of their souls?
