Reading the rabbi’s books in the bathroom

שו”תCategory: HalachaReading the rabbi’s books in the bathroom
asked 5 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
I recently purchased several of your books: the trilogy, ‘God Plays Dice,’ ‘The Science of Freedom,’ and ‘Truth and Unstable.’

Is it permissible to read the books in the bathroom? Apparently, for the second and third books in the trilogy at least, this is prohibited…
And regarding ‘A.M.B.’, is the name one of the names that are not deleted with all that goes with it? [And if so, why write with ‘ה’ and not ‘ק’, isn’t there a fear of disrespect, deletion, entry into the services, etc.]
Or is the term ‘God’ in the context of the book a deistic/theistic god who created and planned the world, but not the Almighty God of the Hebrews (as you wrote in the introduction), and therefore the Rabbi believes that in this context the term ‘God’ is profane language?
thanks!

In my opinion, all of these books are problematic to read in the bathroom, because even if their content is permissible in itself, they will make you ponder Torah verses in the bathroom.
I personally recommend taking Harry Potter to the bathroom, a great book

And I only came to suggest that even in the bathroom, one should be careful not to contemplate the form of a Boggart (a creature that changes into the form of the thing that most frightens the person standing in front of it) when no one is seeing it, because that could lead to contemplations about trees falling in the forest and the relationship between content and representations, etc.
