recruitment

Hello Rabbi Michi.
I’m a Haredi guy, classical and studying in a pretty good yeshiva.
I am indeed quite convinced that there is no plausible justification for us not enlisting (within the framework of the new brigade, mainly).
My question is, do you think it is right for me to actually enlist? That is, if I were a completely independent person, I would certainly do so. But in the real situation, such a step would come at a very heavy price, socially, family-wise, etc. as you know. Now, even at that price, if I knew that my personal enlistment was of great significance, I would probably be willing to pay the price. But after all, this single enlistment will not change the equation of anything and nothing, for something to change for the benefit of reserve soldiers, for example, a much larger general enlistment is needed. Therefore, I wonder if I am morally required to ruin my life for something that does not contribute very significantly?
With thanks

In principle, you have to enlist. Your personal contribution is not the criterion. There is the categorical imperative (that you must do what you would want to be a general law). See column 122. Beyond that, a guy who enlists can influence others to enlist and break the evil Haredi taboo on the matter.
Although if your plan is to study seriously for a very long term, there is room for leniency, as a certain number of serious learners agree to be released. Still, it is a narrow permission, which perhaps can be added to the difficulties you described.
