Risking life for the common good

Shouldn’t all combat roles in the State of Israel be voluntary, that is, is it even reasonable for a state to require a person to risk his life? I’m not talking about military service in civilian roles, which makes sense to require, I’m talking about the situation where anyone with a combat profile is simply thrown into combat whether they want to or not. Why not simply make combat roles voluntary and simply improve their conditions (such as higher pay, etc.)

It seems to me that this wheel has already been invented. It is called a professional army. The proposal for a professional army has been discussed for many years and has sides here and there. I do not have the information and tools to discuss it seriously. Oh, and it is not about volunteering but about work/career.
