Roadblocks

שו”תCategory: generalRoadblocks
asked 2 months ago

Hello Rabbi,
I understand that roadblocks are planned today on dozens of roads across the country. I wanted to ask about this:

1) Do you think this is a legitimate protest measure?
2) Should those who block roads during protests be punished?
Best regards,

In my opinion, it’s not legitimate. But in a reasonable dose, it’s possible to refrain.

In other words, even if the protest was against ultra-Orthodox evasion, would you say that this was an illegitimate protest measure?

Illegal

So the government can oppress the people without limit and the people have no ability to do almost anything
Just stand nicely on the sidewalk and politely ask the government to mend its ways…

There is a price for democracy

That's exactly what I meant when I talked about dosage. Dosage consists of two components: the intensity of the distress (the reason for the protest) and the intensity of the protest (the level of disruption to the public). In principle, it is not permissible to disturb one person in order to save yourself from another person. That's why there are choices. In an extreme situation, you can declare that you no longer accept the rules of the game.

But now you too will be 0 or 100 without a matter of dosage. If there is a distress that is not extreme enough to throw democracy away and cause chaos and civil war perhaps, but maybe to cause disruptions

In general, blocking roads is too easy to do and the result is serious. It is used too much and lightly. From the light-heartedness of blocking a major thoroughfare and delaying tens of thousands of people, babies and the elderly, and often even causing physical damage.
Just the mental anguish that accumulates is enormous to no small extent. In every significant blockade like this, there is at least one entire family who traveled to the event, got dressed, dressed up, got excited, crowded into the car and returned home after 7 hours without the incident. Because of the ease of execution, stupid or evil people do it over trifles.
