Scientific error in iron
Hello,
In the event that there is a halakha that is based on a false scientific assumption, should we accept the halakha because of the authority that the hazl has, or not?
No. But you of course need to make sure of two things: 1. That this halakha is indeed based on this factual assumption. 2. That this factual assumption is incorrect.
In this regard, do you think it is permissible to eat meat and fish?
Quoting Pnini Halacha, which writes that it is supposedly permissible but forbids for another reason: ”Indeed, since for generations the Israelites have practiced not to eat meat and fish together, to the point that the separation between them is one of the hallmarks of Jewish cuisine and etiquette – the accepted practice of being careful not to cook meat with fish, and not to serve meat and fish on the same plate”.
I understand the reluctance. It exists with me too. But reluctance is not a reason to prohibit. And the custom here is invalid because it is based on a wrong intention (it is not a custom but a concern. See column 2).
