smell

asked 6 years ago

Rashad in Sha’ari 63:25, in his commentary on the Plugat of Abaye and Rava, Briha Milta, wrote that in a smell there are invisible parts that pass from the body of the thing to the body of the smeller, (and also in Avan’s Yod 2:2), is it known for its virtue? Does this matter have a scientific basis? And is there such a thing in a thing that makes a sound?

As far as I know, this is exactly what is known today about smell. It is transmitted by particles of the thing passing through the air to the nose. But sound is the movement of air (a pressure wave passing through the air) and not particles of something flying there.
