Some halachic questions

שו”תCategory: HalachaSome halachic questions
asked 3 years ago

Hello Rabbi, I wanted to ask you a few questions.
(Thank you for the detailed halakhic response on the subject of postponing circumcision)
1. What is the ruling on reading books about Israel’s wars on Shabbat? (There is enjoyment in that.) What is generally permitted and prohibited from reading on Shabbat? The issue is not entirely clear to me.
2. Is it permissible to sterilize bottles for a baby on Shabbat? Since we take a bottle, rinse it, and then pour boiling water over it, the remaining drops of water are not needed, but after all, there is an interest in boiling them to kill the bacteria, and therefore it seems that the ruling is different from the drops of water (left over from rinsing) that are not needed in making coffee or tea.
3. What is the Rabbi’s opinion regarding baby sense on Shabbat, a device that beeps and turns on a light when it detects a child’s lack of breathing? Is it permissible to operate it in a change? There is a discussion here on the question of macro and micro rulings, since the device saves toddlers every year and its prohibition on Shabbat means that a minority of children will inevitably die. (Similar to the permission that the Rabbi presented to Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu regarding the use of a flashlight to check the weapon when the soldier descends from the position)

Thank you very much.
Good afternoon

There is a prohibition on lay papers, which is a derivative of “and speak one word at a time.” But the extension to books, especially in our day, is limited and there is no reason to fear this. Certainly books of wisdom and reference are permitted (although there are also those who disagree on this), and even other books for the sake of Shabbat enjoyment. And in the Holy Tongue, there are many who have written that there is no prohibition at all. Now I saw a review here: https://eitamhenkin.wordpress.com/2011/06/22/%D7%A7%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%90%D7%AA-%D7%93%D7%91%D7%A8%D7%99-%D7%93%D7%A4%D7%95%D7%A1-%D7%91%D7%99%D7%9E%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%95-%D7%9C%D7%90%D7%95%D7%A8-%D7%93%D7%99%D7%9F-%D7%A9%D7%98%D7%A8%D7%99-%D7%94%D7%93/

I'll start by saying that I saw that there is a purifying ball that purifies the water without boiling. You can also dry the bottle before boiling it. And even if there are drops in it, it's a waste, because you're not interested in heating the water, but in killing the bacteria. It's similar to coffee and tea, and even easier (because there you do want to heat this water as part of your coffee).
What's the problem with Baby Sense? I understand that the baby activates it when there is shortness of breath. Do you also activate something there yourself?

Thank you very much for the quick response.

Regarding the Baby Sense, every time you pick up the baby, it starts beeping because it doesn't pick up the baby's breath, and then you have to press to stop its ringing because it won't stop on its own, but it's needed to turn the device back on.
There's also a question about the light bulb there, not just the electrical circuit.
(I just saw that there's some kind of solution in the Tzomet Institute's grammar.. but the question is what happens when there's no such option.)

I don't think this justifies your desecration of Shabbat. There is a difference between this and the example of testing weapons. If there is a blanket rule for the entire relevant public, then everyone should obey it because overall it will save lives. If there was a general rule that everyone had to use this device on all babies, it would be the same situation. But when you decide to use such a device on your own, there is no justification for it. The risk to a particular baby is completely negligible.

Regarding water drops https://ph.yhb.org.il/01-10-09/

In the Shabbat Orchot it is stated (to the best of my memory) that the Gershche Ha-Kel is lenient. And the Gershche Eliyashib is stricter.
