Spaces in nature

שו”תCategory: generalSpaces in nature

Is there room to support the position that there are non-deterministic spaces in nature and that there are open spaces? I would love to see examples and arguments for this. Someone told me that chaos and quantum theory say this, is that true?

The question is formulated in terminology borrowed from me. From this it seems that you have read my stuff (in the book God Plays Dice and especially the Science of Freedom), so it seems strange to me that you ask. See the two chapters on the subject in the Science of Freedom. In essence, there are intervals (only in quantum and not in chaos), but this has no implications for God or our freedom of choice.

I didn't know it was from you, someone told me yes about prayer. That God intervenes in these intervals (not about free choice).

Even at the core of the accepted theory of evolution in biological science, it is based on randomness without prior causes.

Indeed, I addressed this in my book as well. This is a mistake made by careless biologists. They tend to treat certain components as random, while this is just a mathematical treatment. According to what is accepted in modern physics, there are no random things on the relevant scales.

Do you think a deterministic worldview contradicts God's personal providence (I'm not saying there is providence, I'm just asking whether it contradicts each other)?

מיכי Staff replied 6 years ago

It contradicts its conventional meaning. In the conventional meaning, private providence is his involvement and decisions at a certain time what will happen according to a person's actions. If everything is predetermined, it is difficult to talk about private providence in this sense. One can of course argue that the laws of nature make the Creator will and through them he supervises. One can also talk about passive supervision (he monitors what is done, but is not involved in what is done).

I would love to receive a copy of the Rabbi's reference to the gaps that exist - or do not - in evolution.

Do you mean randomness in evolution? See here in the section under the heading “Ending Note”:
