Starting a competing business
Is it permissible to establish a business that competes with an existing business in the city when it is a type of business that allows both businesses to exist simultaneously and there is no certainty that establishing the business will even reduce the income of the existing one?
Why not? It is permissible even if it does reduce the other person’s income. Especially if you are talking about a city. See a review regarding a settlement: https://www.yeshiva.org.il/midrash/36051
And an overview here: https://www.daat.ac.il/he-il/mishpat_ivri/maamraim/gelbard-taharut.htm
Is there any moral problem with competition (in the city, not in the locality) when it is not clear whether the establishment of the business will harm the owner of the existing business, and it is quite clear that the existing business will be able to continue to exist (even if there is a possibility that a certain portion of its income will decrease)?
Is this the troll? It seems so.
I'm really asking. Should I be concerned (on a moral level) about the possibility that a business I've started will hurt the revenue of an existing identical business?
