Telephone as a necessity
Just an interesting question I was thinking about, what will religion do in the future if a smartphone becomes such a necessity that it becomes literally impossible to move without it out of habit. Will they allow its use on Shabbat?
I don’t know what “soul food” is. There is soul food.
A necessity that is “equal for everyone”, similar to cigarettes
The question is, in a situation where a telephone, for example, is an inseparable necessity of human life, will it be permitted to be used on Shabbat?
This is not a different category. Rather, there is a law within it. Therefore, the permit depends on the work in question and less on the need. A work that was permitted for one purpose was also permitted for another purpose. In a parallel response, I was asked about electric stoves in the U.S. and I wrote a little there. But I don't have time for a regular mishnah right now.
