In your opinion, if the Sages had known today’s natural sciences, would they have decreed fasts “for every calamity that befalls the public,” such as locusts, landslides, sandstorms, and more?
On the other hand, it really seems “cruel” to go overboard when trouble befalls us.
Is there an appropriate “religious” response?

I don’t know what it was like in their day, but nowadays I suppose there was no point in cutting. I don’t know what’s cruel about recognizing reality.
