The order in circumcision laws in the Rambam

שו”תCategory: HalachaThe order in circumcision laws in the Rambam
asked 5 years ago

Perhaps the Rabbi could explain why Maimonides writes in Chapter 1 of the Mitzvah of Circumcision long discussions about the circumcision of slaves and types of slaves, and only in Chapter 2 does he begin to write what circumcision even is?! Apparently the order is reversed. And I didn’t see that they addressed this.

I don’t see what needs to be addressed. There’s no fluff there. He starts with the obligation to circumcise his son, and then there are some laws that mention that circumcision applies not only to a Jewish child but also to a foreigner and a slave. After determining who must be circumcised, he goes into the laws of circumcision itself. That’s all.

At the end of the books of Rambam, published by / edited by R. Shabtai Frankel. There is a book called "The Key" which provides a guide to many questions about Rambam. Exactly according to the order of the laws. It is recommended that you consult it regularly when you are having difficulty with Rambam.

Did you see anything in that?

I haven't had a chance to check specifically on this matter. I always tend to check there when a question arises.

I don't have the aforementioned Rambam at home. If I remember, when I'm at the Beit Midrash I'll check for you.

Sorry for the long response time. (Previous commitments during the children's vacation)
If you still haven't had a chance to check the book “Hamphat” then I have. And there is no reference to your question.
I also looked into the words of Maimonides himself – and simply agree with the words of the rabbi as above.
(And I just came to draw your attention to the aforementioned compendium – The book “Hamphat”)
