The People of Israel and Torah Study for Women

שו”תCategory: philosophyThe People of Israel and Torah Study for Women

  1. Why, in the Rabbi’s opinion, is there even a reality of the Jewish people that only they are obligated to observe the Torah and the mitzvot? Why can’t every person be able to choose to observe the Torah and mitzvot and thus gain important virtues? In fact, why is the main thing a person’s nationality and not what he chooses with his mind, which is the most important aspect of a person?
  2. How is it possible that women were not commanded to study Torah, which is such an important and central commandment?

  1. Why are there priests and Israelites? God, the Almighty, made a division of roles, and probably thought it was better that way. If someone does not find themselves a Gentile, they can always join Judaism.

2. They were indeed ordered. See my article in the morning.

1. The rabbi actually answered with a question. We can ask the same thing about priests. The question is actually why is a person's rank predetermined and not dependent on his actions? Wouldn't it be more moral for it to be that way?
2. I read it. And it's still difficult - so why haven't women been pushed to study Torah in all generations, and it's hard to say that it was because of their lack of education, because if it were important they would have taken care of it. In addition to that, there is also a verse (I don't remember where right now) that says that women's right in Torah is that they look after the children while the husband is in the study hall and waiting for him, etc., and according to the rabbi, why shouldn't they have a right to deepen their knowledge of Torah?

To note, a bastard scholar is better than a high priest among the people of the land.

1. There are advantages to determining status in advance, even if it also has disadvantages. For example, when a king's son is appointed king, he knows the role and is educated for it. It is true that if there is someone more worthy, then it is appropriate to give the role to him. And so on in any significant role. A Gentile can convert, but it was probably important to God Almighty that there would be a status in the world that is obligated from the beginning to all 13 commandments. Israel is the first of its harvest. Therefore, there is no contradiction in the fact that a bastard is given priority over a priest with a land. First, this means that Torah precedes priesthood (regardless of whether a bastard is superior to a priest). Second, if someone in a lower status shows great abilities and dedication, he receives the treatment he deserves according to his status. But the role is given from the beginning to a defined group (priests). This is the Rambam in the Shemitah and Yuval, that all who have the heart to dedicate themselves and become like the tribe of Levi will receive similar treatment.

2. First, the sages of the Gemara did not necessarily think as I did. Second, it also depends on their social status. In the past, women were considered inferior creatures with poor intellectual abilities, and therefore their contribution was to push their husbands to learn. Today, women are different (or at least perceived differently). .

(1. This was also my intention, that a bastard (innate status) is a Tahsin (personal advancement) before a priest (innate status, great is also a role) with the land (personal negligence). In other words, status has weight, but it is less weighty than a personal decision. And I did not pretend to address the main point of the matter, why status has weight).
