The pleasures of the body

Why did God create us with the ability to enjoy material pleasures? For example, could He have created us with a desire to eat to sustain the body without the pleasure of the sense of taste, or to sustain fertility and reproduction without physical pleasure? Is there a reason for this? Perhaps someone wrote about it?
