Theft of election cameras

שו”תCategory: HalachaTheft of election cameras
asked 3 years ago

Is there a halakhic prohibition against stealing from the state? For example, taking cameras that were used at the polling station.
Let’s assume that there is no halakhic prohibition, does that mean that there is indeed no problem at all in doing so, since if there were a problem, the Torah would prohibit it?
Thank you in advance.

Of course it is. There is a prohibition against stealing from public property. It is no different from any other person’s property. Beyond that, it is clear that there are things that the halakha does not prohibit and yet are not appropriate. The categories of “in the sight of the law,” “the measure of Sodom,” “so that you may walk in the way of good people, and do what is right and good,” and so on, all point to that.
