Three questions for the rabbi

שו”תCategory: generalThree questions for the rabbi

1. I understood from the rabbi’s words in one of the interviews, that he praised the study of the Gemara and the Brisk and Ponivez method, which teaches analytical ability and common sense, and is a tool when arguing, not to follow emotions and to have arguments systematically and not to the person’s body, etc. Does it belong to me, as a secular person (I’m asking a long-standing question) with an affinity for culture, to study the Talmud and perhaps through jurisprudence (perhaps roughly like what is learned in academia) without being obligated to fulfill the mitzvot?
2. Briefly about myself: I am 41 years old. I grew up in the ultra-Orthodox Sephardic world, I did not persevere through all sorts of complex hardships, but here and there I studied. I have a superficial acquaintance with your son, and with Talmud, superficial and not extensive. I was not exposed to the study of Lithuanian that much, only here and there I picked up ideas and concepts. I have little time a day, let’s say two hours for study. Do you have a recommendation on how and how much to study? I fell in love with the Rabbi’s way of thinking and studying. If I had remained ultra-Orthodox, I would not have accepted his words, I would only have remained square and fixed. My talents are mediocre and a little below.
3. My dear, he asked truly and innocently. You are in the forefront of the wise in your intelligence, and I hear your criticisms in a tone of dismissal like “nonsense”… about rabbis who I think are honest and innocent in their ways and only go as far as their hands can reach. Wouldn’t it be better for us as listeners to hear more respectful words from you like “I don’t agree with him” instead of “my hunches and my fatties”? I have heard from you several times that in the tents of dialogue there is no listening, only niceness. I think there is a level of not-so-smart people (like me) who don’t know how to argue and sometimes feel that the other person is wrong but don’t know how to express themselves, but they understand that there is someone on the other side who is no less than them, and therefore they respond with a hug, a smile, and silence to only part of his honesty without being able to articulately argue against him.
Many thanks. I have listened to and watched many of your videos, including scholarly thinking, etc. I have some limitations and do not have a minimum education. Is it appropriate to consult with you about what I would be able to acquire in terms of education?

  1. Anyone can learn. But commitment is useful because if you are committed you will be more motivated to find an explanation for everything. Without it you will tend to immediately throw away things that seem illogical. In academia, most of them don’t study Gemara at all but rather do archaeological excavations in the Talmud (some do).
  2. I can’t recommend it. You need to take a yeshiva class.
  3. When I dismiss things, it’s usually nonsense. I don’t usually dismiss things that I simply don’t agree with. The same goes for people. It’s especially people who are too lazy to judge that it’s very important to explain to them when it comes to nonsense or stupid people. Because the appearance is that of scholars and wise people, and they receive credit they don’t deserve and negatively influence their ignorant listeners.

Many thanks for the valuable responses. I have now also learned from your response to question 3. Yes, indeed.

The obligation you mean is a halakhic obligation? I don't think it would work for me if I'm not the most religious and only a connection to the people and sources would oblige me.
